P.I. Podcast: Interview with Dan Pink

December 31st, 2009

Drive Book Cover

Thankfully, 2009 is nearly over and we can look forward to 2010.  To start the new year off on the right foot, I strongly urge you to pick up a copy of Dan Pink’s superb new book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, which is already on my list of the most important books for association leaders to read in the year ahead.

Dan is a good friend of the association community, and in Drive he has given association leaders a powerful framework for rethinking how our organizations can be successful.  Here’s is Dan’s Twitter summary of the book:

Carrots & sticks are so last century.  DRIVE says for 21st century work, we need to upgrade to autonomy, mastery & purpose.

WOW!  The argument is simplicity itself.  In an age of creative, non-routine work, organizations need to think differently about what motivates us as individuals and what, quite literally, drives our collective success.  It is certainly not the kind of fear-based, extrinsic motivators on which so many organizations continue to rely.  For the 21st century, we need to design and build organizations in which staff and voluntary leaders are more self-directed, constantly building their capacity and working toward achieving a compelling purpose.  OMG, why didn’t we realize this years ago?

Dan supports his argument with a ton of scientific evidence and solid common sense, as well as effective practices from forward-looking organizations that have already embraced a new way of working.  Drive also includes a highly useful toolkit that will help you apply the book’s ideas personally and in your association.

Without question, you need to get your copy of Drive right away.  Why not use one of those gift cards you got for Christmas?  And if you’re planning to attend ASAE & The Center’s Great Ideas Conference in March, you can look forward to hearing Dan’s closing general session talk!

This podcast (36 MB download) is just about 39 minutes in length.  Please e-mail me if you have any comments, questions and suggestions for future guests.  And please don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!
