P.I. Podcast: Interview with Scott Anthony

July 21st, 2009

The Silver Lining Cover

Earlier today, I had the opportunity to interview Scott Anthony, president of the innovation consulting firm, Innosight, and author of The Silver Lining: An Innovation Playbook for Uncertain Times.  Scott’s book is a very useful resource for leaders who are thinking about how to make innovation happen in their organizations, especially during these difficult times.  In fact, during our conversation, Scott had a great quote about the misguided point of view some leaders hold about innovation in the context of today’s economy:

“They say, ‘I can innovate or I can survive.’ It’s a false choice.”

That’s exactly right, and it is an especially false choice for associations struggling with the difficulties of the current economic environment.  Yes, your members may be suffering right now, but the long-term sustainability of your association depends on helping them discover the new success living beyond the old problems, not on joining them in the pain.  The inherent danger of pursuing survival strategies is that even when they work, they leave the organization severely weakened and totally unprepared for the next set of challenges and opportunities.  Only a deep organizational commitment to a wise and balanced approach to innovation will ensure both short-term survival and long-term success.

The Silver Lining makes a great addition to every innovation library, and it is a particularly good read right now.  I strongly encourage you to check it out, and please listen to my podcast with Scott, which is part of a virtual book tour taking place this week.  Thanks to my friend and fellow innovation blogger Renee Hopkins Callahan for including the P.I. Blog as a stop on the tour!

The podcast is 26 minutes in length.  If you’re viewing this post on the P.I. Blog, you will see an embedded podcast player below.  You can download the podcast here
