P.I. Podcast: Interview with Andrew Lih

April 21st, 2009

wikipedia revolution cover

Do you know what percentage of the U.S. Internet traffic to encyclopedia websites goes to Wikipedia?

Does 97% sound about right to you?

The amazing growth of Wikipedia during this decade has changed forever the way the world thinks about encyclopedias and, arguably, about knowledge itself.  Given its enormous global influence, this is a great time for someone to tell the story of the site’s evolution from the failed Nupedia experiment to its current standing as the 7th most visited site on the World Wide Web.

In his new book, The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World’s Great Encyclopedia, author Andrew Lih has done a superb job in telling the Wikipedia story.  A former software engineer turned scholar, new media researcher and consultant, Lih first became involved with Wikipedia in 2003.  As a Wikipedian, Andrew brings an insider’s sensibility and depth of knowledge to the conversation, something that comes through both in the book and in our podcast.

Be forewarned that this podcast is long: more than 55 minutes in length.  I did think about editing it down into two shorter segments, but I decided that the P.I. Blog audience can handle it as is.  Also, make note that I was reaching Andrew in China, so there are occasional and very brief audio drops throughout the podcast.  Annoying, yes, but nothing that should detract from your understanding or enjoyment.

As always, I welcome your comments, feedback and suggestions for future guests on the podcast.  I’ll be posting a new podcast interview on Thursday, so stay tuned!
