P.I. Podcast interview with Jeff Gordinier
February 3rd, 2009

What happens when two guys named Jeff, both born in the second half of the 1960s, with a shared passion for Boston (the band) do a podcast? I guess you’ll need to listen!
Earlier today, I had the opportunity to interview Jeff Gordinier, editor-at-large at Details magazine and author of X Saves the World: How Generation X Got the Shaft but Can Still Keep Everything from Sucking, which was named one of the Fast Company’s Top Ten Business Books of 2008. The book came out in early 2008, and was released in paperback late last month.
Gordinier’s book, like Jeff himself, is very funny, filled with entertaining cultural references and quite pointed on the issues of generational shift. Consider the following passage:
…while the boomers and millennials have been siphoning up all this mass-media oxygen, somebody seems to have forgotten to put together the cover stories about Generation X turning forty. More to the point, somebody seems to have forgotten Generation X. We hear plenty about people in their teens and twenties, and even more about people in their fifties, but the stodgy old species known as the thirtysomething has been shuttled off, like Molly Ringwald herself, to some sort of Camp Limbo for demographic lepers. Could it be that the age group that popularized the phrase ‘jumped the shark’ has done just that? Is Generation X already obsolete?
WOW! Amen brother.
Seriously though, this was a fun podcast for me to do, and I think you’ll enjoy it as well. Be sure to listen carefully for Jeff’s simple advice for improving relationships between and among the generations. As always, I look forward to your comments and feedback on the podcast, which you can post below or send to me directly. This podcast lasts about 35 minutes.
