Today, I had a great interview with Dr. Matthew Fraser, senior research fellow at the INSEAD business school in France, and co-author (with Professor Soumitra Dutta) of the equally great new book, Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom: How Online Social Networking Will Transform Your Life, Work and World.
Throwing sheep, you ask? Well, P.I. Blog and Podcast followers who are members of Facebook will automatically recognize this playful phrase. Throwing sheep is just one of many fun (and somewhat silly) social gestures you can perform on Facebook to let your friends know you’re there and to nudge them to contact you. Throwing Sheep is organized thematically around the impact of social networking on personal identity, social status and the exercise of power. Throughout our society, including within associations, social technologies are changing the landscape along each of these dimensions. Staff and volunteer leaders alike should read and talk about this book to gain greater insight into how the horizontal collaboration of social networks is subverting the long-standing hegemony of traditional vertical hierarchies.
