Why do I blog?
July 17th, 2008
For a couple of different reasons, I’ve been reflecting on this question in recent days, and so I wanted to share the three most significant reasons why I blog:
1. To create a space where I can be provocative with a purpose–My role as a strategic advisor to associations is to help my clients think differently about the future, and to make leaders feel some discomfort with their current assumptions in the process. The Principled Innovation Blog is one way I try to accomplish this goal.
2. To engage in and with the broader conversation about associations to which other bloggers, writers and members of our community also contribute–In the last few years, I have seen this dialogue become much richer and far more important, especially as more new bloggers have entered the space. Without question, I believe this has been a very positive development for the association community, because we are now able to consider a much wider and more varied set of perspectives.
3. To test new ideas and refine new thinking–This point is certainly related to the first one, but it has some different features. Since blogs (not to mention the Web itself) are perpetual prototypes, I view the Principled Innovation Blog as something of a proving ground for concepts that I may subsequently write about elsewhere or suggest to clients. Of course, a good part of what I write about here will never be more than a single post, and sometimes I will explore an idea in writing with the full knowledge that it won’t go anywhere. The opportunity to engage in this kind of “out loud learning” is invaluable, and very difficult to do in print.
Why do you blog? Why do you read this blog? I’d love to know your answers to either or both of these questions. Please share!
