JFK Quote from Jeffrey Sachs

May 1st, 2008

At GSSR today, economist Jeffrey Sachs offered an inspirational quote from President Kennedy’s June 10, 1963 commencement address at American University. Here is the quote:

So, let us not be blind to our differences–but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.

The power of words to inspire never fails to amaze me. It’s been nearly 45 years since Kennedy spoke these words, and they continue to move me and many, many other people. Which quotes inspire you? Please post them as comments below and let’s see if we can get a really good list going!

    One of my favourites is:
“What we do know and can do will ALWAYS be exceeded by what we don’t know and can’t do.”
Great leaders understand this and are humble in their leadership and this is what makes them great.
