Deconstructing Association 3.0

Association 3.0 Chart

Following on the article in Associations Now, I decided to put together a chart that deconstructs what I regard as the core elements of Association 3.0. It’s a first attempt, and I’m hoping for your feedback, including responses to the following questions in the comments below:

+Does this chart make sense to you, i.e., is it understandalbe? If not, what specifically isn’t clear?

+Does this chart resonate with you? If not, what doesn’t ring true?

+Is there anything you would add? Is there anything you would take away?

+Which among the elements of the chart would you like me to write more about here in the next few months?

I included this chart in a public presentation for the first time today, mostly as a tool for explaining that “the next traditions” are really about a bottom-up or “outside-in” way of thinking about our associations. So I can still make changes to the chart to reflect new thinking.

Thanks in advance for contributing your ideas. I look forward to the conversation!

Jeff, here’s my comment: I think you actually have two or three slides in one! It might be clearer to just have the three middle boxes as your main slide. Your “Next Traditions” deserve a slide of their own!

My other thought was, if you’re looking at this from an association management point of view, I was wondering if the key challenge to value/creation is actually “making meaning”, and the key challenge to collaboration/trust is actually “risk management” (so switch those two around). Did I not get it? : )

Jeff… my but you can condense your concept (better than having no ideas!) - and I agree with Maddie.

Also look up David Sibbet (he was the director of Coro Foundation when I was a Fellow there) and ask him to do a visual map of this.
Different than our friends at Common Craft yet perhaps best for what you are attempting to show here.

See my interview of deep-thinker David here

Methinks you have grist here for a primier session at some asn. Meeting such as PCMA, followed by an interactive session on 3.0.
