Simple solution to a nagging WP blog problem

February 22nd, 2008

I’ve been blogging on a custom-designed Wordpress template for about two years now, and one of the most frustrating aspects of what is otherwise a fantastic platform is that embedded videos will simply blow up the design. I’ve had to come up with alternative ways of getting those videos to appear properly within the blog, but it looks like a simple solution to this nagging problem has finally arrived!

Developer Matteo Ionescu has come up with an incredibly straightforward plugin that makes it really easy to embed videos into a Wordpress installation. It took me only a few minutes to set up the plugin and I was able to to quickly embed this video, which is the final version of Michael Wesch’s The Machine is Us/ing Us. I posted the first version (with much greater difficulty) of the video on the P.I. Blog last year.

So, with this plugin set up, I’ll be able to offer more embedded video content on this blog going forward. If you’re looking for original video content for the association community, check out what’s happening over at Principled Innovation TV!

    Amazing how many great plug-ins are out there to really make your life easier. Personally, I prefer Viper’s Video Quicktags. It allows you to embed videos from a bunch of sources including:

    * YouTube
    * Google Video
    * IFILM
    * Metacafe
    * MySpace videos
    * QuickTime files
    * Generic video files (AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc.)
    * FLV (Flash video) files (only basic support, use a dedicated FLV plugin if you want full configuration options)

    If you aren’t totally in love with your current choice, I’d highly recommend checking it out.
