P.I. Podcast: Jim Gilmore on Authenticity
January 1st, 2008

Jim Gilmore and Joe Pine, co-authors of the popular and influential late-90s management tome, The Experience Economy, have released a brand new book through Harvard Business School Publishing.
In this new book, Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want, Gilmore and Pine contend that in a time when so much in our society is inauthentic, the new business imperative for all organizations is “rendering authenticity.” Late last week, co-author Jim Gilmore and I chatted by phone about the book, and some of the questions and implications it raises for associations. I think you will find our conversation both provocative and compelling.
During the interview, I asked Jim how association CEOs might succeed in getting their boards to pay attention to authenticity, an issue some boards could consider to be soft. I love the question he proposes to have boards consider:
Where are we most fake today?
How would your board answer this question about your association? How would you? Share your thoughts (on the question and the podcast overall) below or by e-mail.
FYI, this is the first of several podcasts I will be posting in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for some more great thought leader interview conversations.
