Right on.

From Euan Semple’s The Obvious? blog:

The biggest risk of Web 2.0 …

… is that giving it a name affords people the excuse of seeing it as a fad, dismissing it, and missing the longer term shifts in society that were probably happening anwyay but that the web is almost certainly speeding up.

As usual, Euan is spot on. The risk of denial in the association community is particularly acute, as we try to comfort ourselves with the idea that since the dot-com boom in the 1990s didn’t trigger our immediate demise, this too (Web 2.0) shall pass. That’s dead wrong. The dot-coms may not have, as one busted company CEO put it at the time, “eaten our lunch,” but they certainly set the table for what could be an even bigger feast today. Fortunately, for associations with leaders who don’t make excuses and are able to think differently, there is still time to scale down the buffet. So, I ask you:

Are you serving up your association on a platter or are you going to take it off the menu?
