P.I. Podcast #6: Interview with Euan Semple

March 20th, 2007

Today, I spoke with Euan Semple, former Head of Knowledge Management for the BBC, and now a blogger, speaker and advisor on Enterprise 2.0. We had an excellent conversation on Enterprise 2.0 and its implications for organizations of all sizes, including associations. Euan explains the “ecological approach” he took to gaining the adoption of social media tools at the BBC, and offers some sage advice to association leaders who are thinking about how to bring these tools into their organizations.

One particularly significant point I took away from today’s conversation is that we should think about the democratization of our organizations by social media as an opportunity for a more open and intense engagement with our members and staff colleagues. This is a powerful observation for our community, because the success of associations is so dependent on the intensity of stakeholder commitment and engagement. It confirms for me that the purposeful application to our work of social media tools (and the ways of thinking that go along with them) will help us bridge the growing gulf between the collaborative relationships we aspire to have and those we actually experience on a daily basis.

I should also point out that about halfway through our conversation, Euan’s phone rings, which gave us both a great laugh. I like to post my conversations as they unfold, without much editing of stuff that just happens naturally, so you will hear the phone ring and Euan’s answering machine pick up in the background. Hey, it’s a podcast, so just laugh with us!

Euan writes an excellent blog called The Obvious?, which I highly recommend. More than just someone who knows his stuff, Euan is a very funny and cheerful guy, and it was a great pleasure to speak with him. Thanks Euan! (The podcast is about 31 minutes in length.)
