Let’s have a social media unconference

March 10th, 2007

Yesterday, I did a two-hour “super session” on social media for IAEE’s DC Chapter. I had a great time, and I believe the learners found it useful. The experience got me thinking, however, that a really thorough exploration of the best ways for associations to apply social media will require more time and greater flexibility in addressing the topics that are most relevant to the audience.

So I want to propose that we organize an association social media unconference for some time in the next six months. The growing interest in social media in our community leads me to believe that the timing for such an event is right, and I know it would be really fun!

I’ve created a wiki to facilitate our organizing efforts. Irrespective of your current level of involvement with social media in associations, I hope you will consider working on this project.  I will post an update at the end of next week.

I’d say that could be a lot of fun. What do you think is the next step in making this happen?

I attended the 2-hour session and it was awesome!!! I wrote up notes for our staff as we are considering how to move forward. I would love to participate in the ongoing unconference!

[…] Two weeks ago, I posted my suggestion that we have a social media unconference within the next six months. I have made an inquiry with ASAE & The Center about using its space in early June for the event, and I am waiting to find out if they will make it available. I hope to hear something next week. […]
