What do you like best about status quo thinking?
February 4th, 2007
If you’re wondering why innovation isn’t a priority in your association, perhaps you should take some time to reflect on this question.
No one is really comfortable being identified as a proponent of status quo thinking, and yet it is a comfortable and familiar way of viewing the world that is difficult to abandon. Innovation is really scary and really difficult. Why bother embracing innovation when we already have such a great understanding of what’s happening and how to succeed in the existing world that we helped to create?
In today’s operating environment, however, status quo thinking is a recipe for disaster. So the next time you confront this common yet surprisingly insidious worldview, ask others in your association what they like best about status quo thinking. Their responses are sure to be quite revealing.
BTW, my answer to this question is simple: it reminds me why associations need to innovate!
