The iPod turns 5
October 23rd, 2006

Just a quick post to wish a very happy birthday to the iPod, which was introduced five years ago today. In a very short time, the iPod (combined with iTunes) has become arguably the most disruptive communications device since the phone. Tens of millions of iPods have been sold and nearly 2 billion songs and videos have been downloaded, and the iPod continues its upward surge. Sure, there are other MP3 players, but no other device sparks the deep emotional connection of the iPod.
I know these feelings of longing very well. My wife and I own a total of six iPods between us and we will more than likely add a couple more once the long-rumored full-screen 6G iPod comes out (rendering above), something that may happen yet this year! (To be honest, I can’t wait, because I really want a video iPod, but I’ve been holding off until this device was released. Some rumors say it will be wireless as well…cool!)
The iPod is one of those rare products that has transcended its original purpose to become a genuine cultural icon. If you don’t have one yet, why not make this a special birthday for a deserving iPod by giving it a good home?
FYI–BusinessWeek has an excellent slide show on the history of the iPod.
