PI Podcast #4 (September 8, 2006)
September 8th, 2006
Okay, dear friends, this podcast replaces the canceled August Skypecast. In this podcast, I discuss things we can do at the association community level to accelerate innovation. I make three specific proposals:
- Innovation networks–Creating networks of associations either regionally or around specific areas of work to co-create new capabilities and develop new ideas. Innovation networks would allow associations to share risk, share intellectual capital and learn from each other over time in a richer and more meaningful way.
- Fund for Association Innovation–a $1 million venture capital fund that would match organizational investments in new ideas, i.e., associations could only request amounts equal to what they are prepared to invest. In return for such investments, the innovation process would be opened to study, and the results shared with the community no matter what the outcome. If an idea achieves success, the association would be expected to invest some dollars back in the fund.
- Executive Master of Science in Association Leadership (EMSAL)–A master’s degree to spark the imagination of a new generation of leaders about what is possible in our organizations in a turbulent and uncertain world. We don’t need a training ground for leaders to run today’s organizations, we need a proving ground for leaders who want to create the organizations of the future. (Boy, I like that way of talking about it. I just wish I had thought of it when I was recording the podcast!)
As always, all comments and suggestions are welcomed, either below or in an e-mail to me. The length of this podcast is 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Have a great weekend!
