No Plutonic love

August 24th, 2006

Here is an update to my recent post about the possible increase in size of our solar system. Delegates to the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly concluded their meeting in Prague today by voting to demote Pluto from a planet to a “dwarf planet.” So, rather than expanding our solar system to 12 planets, the IAU delegates actually have reduced the number of planets to eight. Joining Pluto in the dwarf planets group are Ceres and 2003 UB313, two candidates for inclusion as full-fledged planets when the IAU meeting began earlier this month.

What does it all mean? For one thing, school textbooks and teaching materials will now need to be updated to reflect this change in Pluto’s status. In addition, I would say this development really does point to the necessity of scientific and technological literacy in today’s world. All leaders need to build their understanding of new thinking in various sci-tech disciplines, as well as the implications of these ideas for our lives, our organizations and our society. Our universe, as well as our world, is experiencing the effects of true paradigm shift. We need to get serious about comprehending what that shift really means.
