Social media press releases

June 30th, 2006

Just saw an item in BusinessWeek about the “social media press release” template (link to PDF) created by Boston-based PR firm, SHIFT Communications, LLC. Naturally, the firm is eating its own dog food by applying the approach outlined in its template to a press release announcing the availability of the new release format.

The SHIFT approach combines several different types of social media to create a richer experience. I particularly like the way the format uses both RSS feeds and tagging to create a mechanism for flowing new content to bloggers and journalists, as well as extending the reach of that content beyond the immediate audience of the release. Check out the template and see if your association might choose to design its next press release in this way!
