Making Innovation Happen Survey: Sharing Key Results

Last week, I released some preliminary results from the P.I. Making Innovation Happen Survey. This morning, I am sharing more detailed survey results in the form of the video you (should) see above. You are welcome to download this video, as well as a PDF with an overview of these key results. (The download link will bring you to a page where you will be able to access both files.)

A key takeaway from the survey results is that while association CEOs are focused on driving innovation primarily as a cultural intervention, they are having less success with building innovation as a sustainable organizational capability. This may help explain the top five priorities they have identified for the next twelve months:

  1. Building board support and encouragement for innovation
  2. Business model innovation
  3. Capturing time to innovate
  4. Creative thinking and imagination
  5. Developing new ideas and concepts

These results confirm my view that business model thinking is the right framework for bringing greater focus and discipline to the innovation effort in other areas of association work. Boards must act to ensure their business models are sustainable in the long term, a challenge that will require more significant levels of time, energy and financial investment in the creation of radical new value. By more deeply integrating the daily work of innovation with the long-term stewardship of their business models, associations should find greater success in making innovation happen on a more consistent basis going forward.

In the months ahead, I will continue to explore these and other themes related to the Making Innovation Happen Survey here on the P.I. Blog, and, in the fall, I will be releasing an executive briefing memo for boards, CEOs and C-Suite executives with recommendations, advice and guidance for pursuing the work of innovation, based on the survey results.
